G7 Future of Seas and Ocean Initiative

German G7 Presidency 2022

Germany took over the G7 Presidency from the United Kingdom on 1 January 2022.  With the overarching objective “Progress towards an equitable world”, Germany aims to use its Presidency to strengthen the G7 as a community of values that can work together to make progress with regard to multilateral cooperation, social cohesion and key global challenges. The Presidency agenda will focus on five goals:

  • Strong alliances for a sustainable planet
  • Setting the course of economic stability and transformation
  • Enhanced preparedness for healthy lives
  • Sustainable investments in a better future
  • Stronger together

The sustainable planet priority covers the ocean theme, and under the G7 Presidency, Germany wants to pave the way for a G7 Ocean Deal in order to forge ahead with joint initiatives for ocean conservation and against pollution of the seas. Further priorities include the sustainable use of resources, climate change adaptation and environmentally sustainable supply chains.

“We also want to drive forward the protection and sustainable use of the seas. In continual cooperation with the G7, we want to improve the protection of marine biodiversity in the high seas, the Southern Ocean and the deep sea and continue to do our utmost to develop measures to counter the pollution of the seas.” – German G7 presidency programme, January 2022

The G7 FSOI Coordination Centre will work closely with the German national focal point to support the ocean-related actions during the summit by facilitating dialogues and exchange of information with the G7 FSOI working group and the G7 Ocean Decade Navigation Plan.
