Organised by UNEP, the event served to promote partnerships and co-design in ocean and coastal monitoring and observing, engaging at scale with all relevant actors of society to foster and support data uptake and to enable local solutions to global pressures.
Observing System (Action Area 1)
Support the development of a global initiative for an enhanced, global, sustained sea and ocean observing system.
SOCAT version 2022 main synthesis and gridded products contain quality-controlled in situ surface ocean fCO2 (fugacity of CO2) observations. Thanks to measurements made on ships, moorings, autonomous and drifting surface platforms, the observations cover the global ocean and coastal seas from 1957 to 2021.
Building on the successful Argo network of seafaring temperature and salinity sensors, work is underway to deploy 1,000 floats equipped to study ocean biogeochemistry in greater detail than ever. Beyond serving needs for basic research and science advances, real-time observations from BGC-Argo will also inform a diverse range of stakeholders and facilitate solutions for sustainable ocean management.
The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has affirmed its support to establish a global operational surface ocean CO2 reference network. This one of the priority areas of the G7 FSOI and is a project being developed through the International Ocean Carbon Coordination Project (IOCCP) with G7 FSOI support.
This annual report provides a key insight into the status of the Global Ocean Observing System, assessing observing networks’ progress, focusing on what is needed to meet the challenges and demands for ocean information, and encouraging collaborations and new partners to join the ocean observing community.
On 4 May, the G7 FSOI co-sponsored international workshop, ‘The Global Biogeochemical Argo Fleet: Knowledge to Action’ was launched, marking the beginning of a series of workshops that will highlight the latest scientific advances and showcase the range of applications possible from a global data-stream of the BGC-array.
